How to Run a Quiz at a Work Dinner (Without Losing the Room)
A well-run work-dinner quiz takes 20–25 minutes, sits between main course and dessert, and needs one funny host plus one dedicated scorekeeper. The mechanics matter as much as the questions — good questions poorly hosted flop, and mediocre questions well hosted land. Below is the full facilitation playbook.
When exactly should the quiz slot into the evening?
The reliable time is between main course and dessert. Why:
- Guests are settled, drinks are flowing, food service has a natural break.
- 30-40 minutes is exactly enough time before dessert lands.
- The quiz ends as dessert arrives — perfect energy handoff.
- No one is arriving late or leaving early during this window.
Windows to avoid: the first 30 minutes (arrivals), during main courses (food service disrupts flow), the last 30 minutes (train-checking), and immediately after speeches (the room is already sat still and needs to move).
How long should the quiz run?
Hard cap: 25 minutes. That's 4–5 rounds of 5–6 questions each, with reveals and light host banter. Break it down:
- Question read + timer: 20 seconds.
- Answer reveal + brief comment: 20 seconds.
- Round transition: 60 seconds.
At ~50 seconds per question with round breaks, 25 questions = 22-24 minutes. Any more feels long. If you have 40 great questions, save 15 for next year.
Who should host?
The funniest person in the room, regardless of seniority.
Seniority hosting turns the quiz into a company meeting — the room reads it as "we're being managed." A funny mid-level colleague reads the room, lands the jokes, and knows when to cut a round short. If your funniest colleague is nervous about mic-ing up, offer to be their scorekeeper and stand next to them.

Team formation
- Teams of 4–6. Fewer feels lonely, more means dominant voices swallow the quieter members.
- Assign teams by table or randomly by drawing names. Never let teams self-select — cliques form and new hires get stranded.
- Every team picks a name in the first 60 seconds. Announce team names as scores go up ("Legal Beagles, 12 points").
Hosting technique — the four things that matter
1. Read the question twice. Once to introduce it, once for people to write. This isn't padding — half the room misses the first reading.
2. Give the timer visibly. "You have 20 seconds. Go." Stand next to the timer. Announce "10 seconds" and "5 seconds." Sounds theatrical — works.
3. Reveal with pause. Read the question again, pause, then reveal. "The answer is…" [pause] "…1976." The pause is where the tension is. Rushed reveals kill the round.
4. Read the score after every round, not every question. Announcing after every question drags. Round summaries keep momentum.
The escape hatches you need to prepare
Every quiz has moments where a round dies. Have three exit routes ready:
- "We're skipping to the last two questions of this round." Cuts a bombing round in half without acknowledging it's bombing.
- "Quick bonus round — 30 seconds, everyone writes the funniest possible wrong answer to this question." Turns a dead moment into 90 seconds of laughs.
- "We're going to do a lightning round of 3 fast questions and then break." Forces energy back up.
Great hosts use one of these once per quiz. Nervous hosts push through the bad round and lose the room.
Scoring — the mechanics that matter
- One scorekeeper, dedicated. Not the host. Not someone eating.
- Papers collected per round, not per question. Faster.
- 2 points per correct answer, 3 for the bonus round, halved for wrong-order rapid-fire. Round numbers make mental math easy.
- Announce scores after every round, with cumulative running total. Suspense builds.
- Don't reveal the winner until the very end, no matter how far ahead one team is. Someone might catch up in the finale.
